Class 172 Trains
Operated by London Overground
Upgrading the Gospel Oak Line
Class 172 trains was first introduced in September 2010. They replaced aging Class 150/1 trains which were inherited from Silverlink when London Overground took over most of their network.
These trains were ordered by London Overground as part of a multi-million investment programme to bring the network up to today’s standard. As part of the deal of new trains, stations were staffed from the first train to the last, heavily refurbished and modernised.
These trains have many new features and benefits for passengers:
Air conditioning
Audio and visual announcements
Formed of 2 coaches
Enhanced CCTV
More standing room
High back seating throughout
Standard and perch seating
Wheelchair accessible – priority area
Wider plug doors
There are 8 units in service, numbered 172001 to 172008 and can be found on the Gospel Oak branch line.
However, the Gospel Oak Branch has recently been electrified and new longer Class 710 Trains will be
introduced once testing has been completed.
