To allow the conversion of three car trains on the Lewisham branch, platform extensions took place along the line.
However, at South Quay due to limited space and the tight curves either side of the station. - The decision was made by Transport for London to relocate the station further north (after the tight curves).
Major infrastructure work took place at weekend closures whilst minor cosmetic work was completed whilst trains were running.
The new station (ready for three car trains) was construction during 2009 and opened in late in October 2009.
The station is fully accessible via lifts and escalators.
